Biography

Argentinian baritone Germán Enrique Alcántara has been making his name as a leading Verdi interpreter.

In April 2024, he made his role debut as Simon Boccanegra in London-based Opera Rara’s revival of the 1857 version of Verdi’s opera. A concert performance in Manchester with the Hallé and Sir Mark Elder was followed a year later by the world premiere studio recording release of the opera marking Alcántara’s recording debut. Since its release, the recording has not only been picked as one of the Best Classical Albums of 2025 by The New York Times, The Arts Desk, The Times and Gramophone but also received nominations from the Gramophone Classical Music Awards, International Opera Awards and the International Classical Music Awards. In December, Presto Music awarded Germán with the award for ‘Recording Debut of the Year’ in recognition of his achievements with this release.

Following the performance and recording of Simon Boccanegra with Opera Rara, Alcántara was invited by Sir Mark Elder to make his role debut as Miller in Verdi’s Luisa Miller at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in December. This production follows a string of recent major Verdi debuts including the title role in Rigoletto at Welsh National Opera, Renato in Un ballo in Maschera at Teatro Colón, Marquis de Posa in Don Carlos (French version) and Giorgio Germont in La traviata, both at Theater Kiel.

In addition to Luiser Miller, further highlights of Alcántara’s 2025/26 season include his Spanish debut at Teatro Real, Madrid singing the role of Kyoto for the first time in two concert performances of Mascagni’s Iris; role debut as Sir Riccardo Forth in Bellini’s I Puritani at Teatro Colón; debut at Opéra du Capitole de Toulouse as Enrico in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor; debut in Chile as Marcello in Puccini’s La bohème at Teatro Municipal, a role which he will later then reprise at London’s Royal Ballet and Opera; and role debut as Alphonse in Donizetti’s La Favorite at the Klangvokal Festival Dortmund. Alcántara also returned to Opera Rara at the start of the season to give a recital of rare Italian and Argentinian songs by Donizetti, Esnaola, Aguirre, Buchardo, Torrá, Williams and Carrique. Several of the Argentinian songs received their UK premieres that evening and Alcántara’s exploration of music from his homeland will continue when he records his first recital album Cantares with his long-time collaborator, pianist Knut Jacques.

Born in the Misiones province of Argentina, Germán Enrique Alcántara grew up surrounded by music-making thanks to his grandfather who first taught him to play the guitar, the accordion and to sing. Alcántara joined his first choir at school and continued singing in ensembles all throughout his studies including with the Coro Universitário de Mendoza, one of the most important choirs in Argentina, and the Coro Estable del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. From Argentina, he moved to Paris in 2014 to study under Rosa Dominguez at the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris and then to Madrid in 2016, to study under Ryland Davies at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia for two years. He is currently researching for a PhD in Music and Performance at the Universidade de Aveiro with the project title Cantocando: Self-accompaniment challenges.

Since graduating from the Jette Parker Young Artists programme in London, highlights of recent seasons include Alcántara’s Italy and role debut as Wainwright’s Hadrian at the Festival di Spoleto (2024/25 season); role debut as Cantador in Piazzolla’s Maria de Buneos Aires at Oper Köln (2024/25 season); US debut as Mozart’s Don Giovanni at San Diego Opera (2023/24 season); role debut as Manfredo in Mercadante’s Il Giuramento at Klangvokal Musikfestival Dortmund (2022/23 season); role debut as Enrico in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at Deutsche Opera Berlin (2022/23 season); and Argentina and role debut as Belcore in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore at Teatro Colón (2021/22 season).

Amongst Alcántara’s many accolades include winning First Prize at the Joşé Carreras Grand Prix Second Edition International Vocal Competition of the Elena Obraztsova Foundation (2021); Gold Medal with High Distinction at the Manhattan International Competition in New York (2021); Audience Prize, Teatro Prize, Amics de l’Òpera de Sabadell Special Prize and Third Prize at the 58th Concurs Internacional Tenor Viñas Competition in Barcelona (2021); and Laureate at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels (2018).

Our traditional 'Debut Album' award gets a slight rebrand this year in recognition of the extraordinary big-match temperament displayed by this Argentinian baritone, who stepped into the daunting title-role of Boccanegra on barely a week's notice - having never sung a major Verdi role or made a commercial recording before. And he emerges with flying colours, both as the young firebrand of the Prologue and the elder statesman of the opera proper.” - Presto Music Awards, December 2025
